What Is Intense Pulsed Light Treatment?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is an advanced procedure that we use for both our aesthetic and eye care services. During IPL therapy, we use high bursts of light energy to heat targeted cells in your skin. This type of treatment can correct various skin conditions, such as discoloration and stretch marks, and alleviate the symptoms of certain eye conditions.

The Versatility of IPL

IPL is able to treat a number of different imperfections and skin conditions, including:

  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Liver or age spots
  • Certain wrinkles
  • Discolored skin
  • Rosacea redness
  • Scars
  • Freckles

IPL for Dry Eye Treatment

Our team also uses IPL for the treatment of dry eye disease. IPL can help clear up meibomian gland blockage, which leads to low-quality tears, a common cause of dry eye symptoms. These short, painless light bursts clear away any dirt or debris that can inhibit proper meibomian gland production, stimulating the creation of healthy tears.

What Can I Expect from IPL Therapy?

The details of your specific IPL treatment will depend on your skins and what the treatment is being used for. Depending on the specific concerns you’re addressing, you may need multiple sessions as well. We’ll discuss your IPL treatment in detail during your consultation.

Does IPL Hurt?

Most people find that IPL treatment is painless, though there can be some discomfort involved. You will feel warm pulses of energy, which some people find to slightly sting.

How Should I Prepare for IPL Treatment?

Before your procedure, you should avoid using tanning beds or creams for at least four weeks. You should also not get any waxes, chemical peels or collagen shots for two weeks. Don’t wear perfume, makeup or any skin irritants on the day of your treatment, and avoid taking aspirin or any medication that will increase your sensitivity to the sun.

What Happens After IPL Treatment?

In the hours after your IPL treatment, you’ll likely feel like you have a sunburn, and ice packs or a cold washcloth can help relieve this sensation. Your skin can look red or burned for a day or two afterwards, and brown spots should peel off within a couple weeks. Make sure to also use sunscreen regularly, even if it’s not sunny outside.
