As an aesthetic provider, one of the most common questions I hear is, “Should I choose CO₂ laser resurfacing or ResurFX?” Both treatments are designed to improve skin quality and stimulate collagen production, but they work differently and are appropriate for different skin concerns and recovery preferences.

At California LASIK & Eye in Sacramento, I help patients determine which laser treatment best aligns with their skin condition, goals, and lifestyle. The best option depends on the severity of skin aging, the amount of downtime you’re comfortable with, and the results you’re hoping to achieve.

What Is CO₂ Laser Resurfacing?

CO₂ laser resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that removes microscopic columns of damaged skin while heating the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen remodeling.

CO₂ laser resurfacing is commonly used to improve deep wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, rough skin texture, and signs of skin aging.

Because the treatment addresses both the skin’s surface and deeper collagen layers, it can produce significant improvement for appropriately selected patients. In my experience treating aesthetic patients, CO₂ resurfacing is often recommended for individuals seeking more dramatic skin rejuvenation and who are willing to undergo a longer recovery period.

Recovery typically involves one to two weeks of healing, followed by gradual improvement in skin tone and texture as collagen continues to remodel over the following months.

What Is ResurFX?

ResurFX is a fractional non-ablative laser resurfacing treatment that stimulates collagen beneath the skin without removing the outer layer, requiring significantly less downtime than ablative laser treatments.

Instead of vaporizing skin, ResurFX creates controlled thermal injury beneath the surface, allowing the surrounding healthy tissue to speed healing. Because the outer layer of skin remains largely intact, recovery is generally shorter than with CO₂ laser resurfacing.

In my clinical experience, ResurFX is a popular option for patients who want to improve early signs of aging, enlarged pores, mild acne scars, uneven texture, or sun damage while minimizing time away from work or social activities.

CO₂ Laser Resurfacing vs. ResurFX: What’s the Difference?

Although both treatments stimulate collagen production, their intensity differs considerably.

CO₂ laser resurfacing removes portions of the skin’s surface while remodeling deeper collagen. This approach typically offers greater correction for advanced signs of aging, deeper wrinkles, and more significant acne scarring.

ResurFX works beneath the skin without removing the outer layer, making it a less aggressive treatment with a shorter recovery. Because each treatment is gentler, multiple sessions are often recommended to achieve optimal improvement.

One way I explain the difference to patients is that CO₂ laser resurfacing is often better suited for more advanced skin rejuvenation, while ResurFX is an excellent option for patients looking for gradual collagen stimulation with minimal interruption to daily life.

Which Treatment Has More Downtime?

Recovery is often one of the biggest deciding factors.

Following CO₂ laser resurfacing, patients should expect redness, swelling, peeling, and careful skincare during the initial healing phase. Many patients plan approximately one to two weeks away from major social events while their skin recovers.

After ResurFX, most patients experience redness similar to a mild sunburn with temporary swelling. Many are able to return to their normal routines within a few days, depending on the treatment settings and their individual healing response.

Which Laser Is Better for Wrinkles and Acne Scars?

There is no single laser that is best for everyone.

Patients with deeper wrinkles, more advanced sun damage, or significant acne scarring may benefit from the greater corrective potential of CO₂ laser resurfacing.

Patients with mild to moderate skin aging who want collagen stimulation with less downtime often make excellent candidates for ResurFX.

During a consultation, I evaluate each patient’s skin type, medical history, aesthetic goals, and recovery preferences before recommending a treatment plan. In some cases, combining different technologies over time may provide the most balanced approach to skin rejuvenation.

How Do I Choose Between CO₂ Laser Resurfacing and ResurFX?

Choosing the right laser treatment begins with a professional evaluation.

At California LASIK & Eye in Sacramento, I work with patients to develop individualized treatment plans based on their skin concerns, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Rather than recommending the same procedure for every patient, I believe the best outcomes come from matching the right technology to the right person.
